Budgeting Tips for once You get a Place

First thing you need to do is write down all expenses including rent, utilities, phone and wifi for the month. Then write down needs and debt. Then write down purchases you'd like to make or investments you want to start making.  Once you do that write down how much you make in a month. Yes, the amounts' totals will be very out of reach so don't sweat it, because we aren't doing that. You need to now worry about bills first, needs second, then debt. If you don't make enough for debts don't go into debt to pay debt, that's a neverending cycle. Just save the leftover money until you can pay one debt and remember you can call the debt collector and try to settle for less. This takes some bravery, but haggle that debt down. Especially if it's been sitting for a long time. I need to practice what I preach about debt, but I have started saving, so there you go. When you are done paying debts down, it's time to enjoy life. Treat yourself and save up for a w...

A Little Financial Literacy for those with an Ability to get Mail

If you have a bank account you can start doing a lot. I know a lot of homeless people are disabled so if you get a SSA check put it in a JP Morgan Chase account. It's got good security.  Next, get a revolut account. Put at least $50 in savings. It's a high yield savings account of 3.5% and it will go up a few dollars without extra deposits every month. However, budget to continue to add to this account. Soon you'll have money for a place. Then open a Betterment account and use the IRA account. Go for traditional IRA. Put at least $25 in it a month until you retire. It is also high yield and will accrue monthly. After that, get an Atlas card. It's a low balance credit card that will go up if you pay on time. The first month was $15 and I added $100. Now month two it is $138. It's worth it to add to your credit score.  Now, after those accounts are acquired: save, save, save. Get Credit Sesame and monitor your credit score. If you have to pay credit down, like me, you...

How to find Housing - Sangamon County Edition

There are case managers at homeless shelters who can help you find housing at a meeting. There are other ways though and I'm here to cover them. First, the local library has a case manger for a few hours a day that helps with many things if you stay at the mission. She has helped people gather identification as well as find subsidized housing. Second, your insurance if you have medicare helps with food, housing, and needs. They have a courtesy call that I need to answer soon. But this is another way. You can go to Urban League or Public Housing Authority and get a list of services. PHA helps you get on section 8, now housing choice voucher, when they are open for enrollment. If you have a drug problem, there is family guidance center that will help you with a residential program. You have to be a drug user getting off the sauce, however. Whatever you choose, I hope this was helpful. Please subscribe.
