A Little Financial Literacy for those with an Ability to get Mail
If you have a bank account you can start doing a lot. I know a lot of homeless people are disabled so if you get a SSA check put it in a JP Morgan Chase account. It's got good security.
Next, get a revolut account. Put at least $50 in savings. It's a high yield savings account of 3.5% and it will go up a few dollars without extra deposits every month. However, budget to continue to add to this account. Soon you'll have money for a place.
Then open a Betterment account and use the IRA account. Go for traditional IRA. Put at least $25 in it a month until you retire. It is also high yield and will accrue monthly.
After that, get an Atlas card. It's a low balance credit card that will go up if you pay on time. The first month was $15 and I added $100. Now month two it is $138. It's worth it to add to your credit score.
Now, after those accounts are acquired: save, save, save. Get Credit Sesame and monitor your credit score. If you have to pay credit down, like me, you will need to save for the collections and closed credit cards. There will always be the dreaded student loans, but it's not that important. They will always be there and you can start paying when you get on your feet.
If you are not lucky enough to get the SSDI paycheck, you will have to work. But get those accounts to save up once you have a job.
